The Morton Tourism Association and the 9th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry are proud to host the 1st Annual Morton Civil War Days on May 6 from 9 am to 5 pm, with a Civil War Ball from 7 to 9 pm. The event continues on the 7th from 9 am to 4 pm. Civil War Days are free to attend and are located in Morton's Southwood Park.
For the inaugural event, there will be a variety of demonstrations, speakers, battles, and more. Children under 12 can participate in a historical scavenger hunt as well as a candy cannon. There will also be appearances by General Grant and General Lee.
A battle reenactment complete with infantry, cavalry and artillery will take place each afternoon. Each battle will serve as a display to the style of tactics and communication that was used during the civil war. Each battle will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
The 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment Band will be performing before and after the battles and also at the Civil War Ball. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend the ball in modern attire.
After the battles, you can watch a First Person Medical Demonstration that will include surgical procedures used during the civil war. There is also an embalmer that demonstrations techniques of embalming during the era.
